2022年的气候和天气灾害事件导致更多人流离失所，许多人的状况也因此恶化。然而，联合国各机构在应对极端天气和气候事件引发的人道主义影响方面展开的合作非常有效，尤其是在减少相关死亡率和经济损失方面。联合国“全民预警”倡议旨在填补现有能力差距，确保地球上每个人都能获得预警服务。但目前仍有约100个国家无法提供充分的气象服务。为实现这一雄心勃勃的任务，需要改善观测网络，并投资于预警、水文和气候服务能力。
古特雷斯表示：“我们已经拥有了工具、知识和解决方案，但我们必须加快行动。我们需要更加深入和快速地减少排放，以将全球升温限制在1.5摄氏度。我们还需要大规模投资于适应和恢复力，特别是对那些最脆弱的国家和社区的投资，即使他们对引起气候危机的责任较小。”
根据2022年全球气候状况报告，全球平均气温比1850-1900年平均水平高出1.15 [1.02至1.28]摄氏度。2015年至2022年是有仪器记录以来最暖的八年。虽然连续三年出现拉尼娜现象的降温效应，但2022年仍是过去50年中第五或第六个最暖的年份。这样的“三峰”拉尼娜现象只在过去50年中发生了三次。
此外，三种主要温室气体（二氧化碳、甲烷和一氧化二氮）的浓度在2021年达到了观测到的最高记录。2021年是可获得全球综合值（1984-2021年）的最近一年。从2020年到2021年，甲烷浓度的年度增长是有记录以来最高的。特定地点的实时数据显示，这三种温室气体的水平在2022年仍在持续上升。
